The Passive Standouts - 2013 - The Passive Standouts

Indie Punk Rock
[FOR FREE]
Impressions
More like The Passive Standups because that’s all I want to do when I listen. This self-titled album spits out rather gritty tunes with ferocity and flare but nothing of an angry nature. They are a 3 piece punk rock band with what sounds to me like plenty of Arctic Monkeys influence (1st album). But what makes this album so fun? Layers! As far as the eye can see. No but really, these guys really know how to jam and that’s one of my favorite things about really rad bands. Jamming out is what turns a two minute rock song into a three of four minute I WANNA ROCK song. More importantly, their name is so accurate. They do stand out and yes, in a passive manner. Stand out with a different edge and focus but passively accessible. These talented boys make indie tightly knitted in a punk beat. Sometimes you get a distorted and shreddy solo, sometimes you get a smoothly groovy bass line, and if you’re lucky the drummer will fill you up with nitrogen. This is a band I’d love to watch live.

Tempest - 2010 - Passages

Hardcore Punk
[FOR FREE]
<a href="http://consume.forgediniron.ca/album/passages"></object></div> <ul> <li style="text-align: left;">6 songs to download</li> <li style="text-align: left;">For free </li> <li style="text-align: left;">Direct Download</li> <li style="text-align: left;">Listening recommendations: <a href="http://www.blogger.com/track/lineage" target="_blank">Lineage</a></li> </ul> <div style="background-color: #45818e; color: white;"> <span style="font-size: small;"><b>Impressions</b></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"> Rarely do I run across punk music through bandcamp that goes for harder edge than mall food court - and you know the kind I mean, without being nearly mind numbingly hard to sit through once, let alone enough times to soak in and review. There's the opposite end of course that's simply thrashing noise which is often equally unlistenable for a multitude of reasons. Along comes Tempest (albeit through a third party and not my usual wasfuersohr manner) and tears the head off of those two with sheer musical virtuosity and unwavering ferocity. I am not normally fond of hardcore, generally due to the vocals being screeches or attempts at grizzly, guttural bellows, failing to capture my attention and detract from the music itself. Somehow <i>Passages</i> is filled with growled vocals I not only didn't hate, but felt melded with the music quite well. Enjoyable even. Of course the vocals being somewhat lost in the ruckus of the instruments might turn some off, but not me. As for those instruments, technically sound guitars and skull crushing floor rattling low end. The rhythm and lead guitars do create one hell of a front-line assault together, with the drum and bass launching mortar fire to back them up. &#8220;Death Rattle&#8221; exemplifies this with its ridiculous tempo and short length (and &#8220;Hierarchy of Greed&#8221; is the follow up knock-out to &#8220;Rattles&#8221;'s gut shot). Rather straight forward in terms of composition, no noodling about with solos or dabbling in different sounds (&#8220;Interlude&#8221; is, I suppose, but it's the damn interlude, man, it doesn't count), nor are there fancy effects being used to pad the tracks out. Thankfully none of that is necessary here, as Tempest get to the point, and fire on all cylinders across these 7 hard-hitting songs. Those looking for something heavy and pummeling should give Tempest's <i>Passages</i> a look.</div> </div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY8qHrygd896tYxTTA-d5CR20zp2lxux3vMI5ysBKXtSKI9qqQ7blkdLYikoLXRPXzQevDmqI9v6vKKwNk-M5LrKaRIc35dTGI_jT4ksrzbGii57BOX-3EabWwsMg1nG3mfSxKJodIbg/s320/4.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Les Guenilles (The Rags, for English speakers speakers) have brought the rock, and from the sounds of it, possibly a chair, baseball bats, and chains. This self-titled EP feels raw, dirty, and hopped up on enough cough medicine to take on the whole bar, just give 'em the wrong look and it's on! This one is for fans of that raw, dirty, decaying rock that will force you to take a shower in order to get the sludge off when you're done listening. The only thing that can be described as having a clean sound are the cymbal crashes, even that would be a stretch. &#8220;Perspective&#8221; widens the spectrum of sonic influences that Les Guenilles bring to the table from more than simply noisy punk and stoner rock that &#8220;Combination Perdante&#8221; starts the whole affair off with and &#8220;Icitte ca sent l'mort&#8221; ends things with. Yes, &#8220;Perspective&#8221;, and to a degree &#8220;Interzone&#8221; have just the right amount of rock-a-billy bleeding into the guitar interplay that you're never quite sure what to expect. Will come next... well aside from the vitriol of course. I mean, that tipsy feeling you hear in rockabilly doesn't usually go hand in hand with such angry punk rock, but it fits these songs like a glove, and these Rags score points for that alone. Les Guenilles don't really reinvent the thrash rock wheel of course, but they play uniformly well (and dirty), so while it may not stick out to aficionados of harder rock so much, if you're missing a Quebecois entry in your collection, this group of guys are certainly worth earmarking for that. I know I'll be using this EP as a spring board to their other works.</div> </div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqSeCCReHFL-DuaaZjWbmjRds3O0X3oSfbTqdnoJfhRHtVTLQCEMrBLl0QoENsCpiMyGJNc4QB4BPqgDvjgfp866X1RU46t0PCbIaCZuPWM9UXGJEf9GMS6qCakRH0sbZRLZilrKhVHA/s320/3.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; English
Have you ever heard of gypsy punk? You're about to.
The Freak Fandango Orchestra will not be everyone's cup of tea, the genres at work here are so seemingly at odds most of the time it can confound and confuse. Others will grab a a draft and dance around a tavern with their lass. Gypsy punk, from what I've come to understand over time, is a mix of punk music and the traditional music of the Roma ('gypsies' – I do dislike this loaded term, personally). To break it down, you've got what sounds like polka, folk, rock, swing, and punk all coming together to form one sound that is really unlike any other (even a bit of jazz in here). Thankfully this is sung mostly in English (good luck deciphering Gogol Bordello if you dare).“Tales of a Dead Fish” is lively and cheery, good for a stroll through town or a bar brawl. Tongue is firmly in cheek lyrically here, but you're not missing out on any joke, these are the sounds of people having a lot fun making kind of weird music. This might be a concept album about a touchy-feely hitman, but I'm not 100% sure. Fun all around really. I mean come on, 'No Means No' has got to be the swinging-est song about sexual harassment in human history. All of the instruments are uniformly excellent, nary a rough edge or distortion to be found here. There are just too many to go into details, suffice to say The FFO make fiddles and accordions cool again. The vocals are also great, with a Spanish accent added to the traditional folk delivery (it's a nice touch for me, as a native English speaker anyway). “Tales of a Dead” has the songs for a night of non-stop drinking and revelry during a game of Dungeons and Dragons. I can see your head has exploded. This really must be heard to be believed.
