They imply that an artist is comfortable enough with a release that they want to sign it with their own name, by not signing it. An artist or band is saying, “This is me”, and “I’m going to put it all on this album” (yes, in those exact words); unless you’re Led Zeppelin and have four consecutive self-titled albums, named by the public. But that’s besides this simple point. On the official Led Zeppelin DVD (2003) Robert Plant said it best: “I think albums are the true statement of a group’s work”, and explains they depict what a group’s been up to over a period of time. Blah, blah, right? None of this is news. But I thought I’d give some background and basis for what I’m about to say: when I see a self-titled release, I get especially excited and intrigued, because it takes confidence through a sense of identity. I’d never heard of Orange Aurora, but thought this was a nifty place to start. Again, none of this is ground breaking or an unpopular opinion, but what good is a blog if you don’t know a little bit about me? I’m a simple man. I pushed play.<o:p></o:p><br /> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> Whether or not the bass on my headphones has slowly deteriorated into an unnoticeable level or the beanie I’m wearing absorbs any luscious low ground which I so precariously yearn for, the treble seems jacked. Guitar notes whistled with that overdrive flutter constantly, but I loved it. This album is a stoner’s dream. The type of stoner that really doesn’t care about life if he’s not stoned, and doesn’t care to notice when he is stoned. The kind that finds comfort in a two chord progression that is<i> Second Glimpse</i> (which I noticed is like a sequel to <i>February</i>, the opener)<i>.</i> This entire album is shoegaze, and my favorite kind too, pop shoegaze.The quiet tracks are relaxing at their core, with some nice sampling in <i>Victoria </i>(For a chill and similar style song that reminds me of the closer, see: <i>Weed Demon </i>by Wavves). The vocals are indiscernible and full of flow, actually perfect for this album. Best tracks are 2, 4, and 5, with 2 being self-titled. Seagulls and white foam blend and resonate from the self-titled track, which I would agree should be the featured track.<o:p></o:p></div> <br /> <div class="MsoNormal"> If you stay up at night held hostage to unpleasant memories or thoughts, this is your album. Let the sweet chords and lead melodies zone you out. Obviously it’s not 5/5 for me, but it goes beyond what could’ve been done differently. I’m not sure, it wasn’t quite unique enough. Honestly, it pains me that I can’t give it a 5, and will undoubtedly be the best 4 I’ve reviewed. It sounds terrific as a close-your-eyes-and-forget set, but the songs are partly forgettable, as beautiful as they sound. There's more than that: I came across the ”Demos better than the finished product” dilemma, as they bear the original rough spark of inspiration. And it's not just me; Martin, the band's guitarist confesses that he sometimes likes them more than the proper album - reason why he has decided to release them 2 months ago.<br /> <br /> Freed from the focus on details & alterations perceived as improvements the demos unveil the authentic stream of inspiration - a most diverse one, I must say, as it gathers and unifies styles of various artists, such as Helios (Keith Kenniff), Badalamenti, Boards of Canada or even David Gilmour. Despite the diversity of the blended tendencies, the album's tight integrity is yet a mystery to me.<br /> Badalamenti's eerie suspended arpeggios from Golden demo 2 intertwined with the post-rock-ish The Original (both demos), the reckless Owlpacas in Flight mingled with the celestial and out of this world tunes of The North Sky, but especially the Gilmour-ish tracks ”Don't Leave”, the highlights of the album, all these styles enrich Red Shadow Landing in a particular way.<br /> <br /> Why Red Shadow Landing? color: white;"> <span style="font-size: small;"><b>Impressions</b></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> I frequently consider whether I should just make a clean slate with the old albums that were still waiting for reviews and every single time I dig one of these up, I find myself reassured that it would an outright horrible idea to do so. Snowmine is making great music, and is one of those bands where it is unclear to me how they are not more popular, even if they are easily among the best known bands on the blog. Varied and catchy instrumentation that you'll hum and sing along with on your second listen, genuinely interesting and intelligently arranged lyrics and a likeable voice make this a no brainer for anyone remotely interested in the genre. They did an incredibly good job at making all songs feel different, which makes it very easy to keep listening to the album over and over again. If you like this album, I highly recommend downloading the other EPs on their Bandcamp page and add these tracks to your track rotation. Due to that variation, not all tracks are of the same high quality, but the ones that are, are hymns to the emotions in life that make life feel worth living. <br /> Music is best when evoking thoughts, emotions and creativity and Laminate Pet Animal is one of those records which brings me down to earth, lets me dream of the sky and motivate me to get to work on stuff that was neglected for way too long. I ended up putting this review on hold nearly indefinitely until such time as I was able to sit down, tell everything else in the world to go intercourse itself and tackle an album review. Four months hasn't changed how I feel about the album thankfully, which is that the rock and roll showcased on <i>When Will You Stop</i> will keep your fist pumping, head nodding/banging with it's twangy bass guitar lead instrumentals. Octopus! have created a record that fits into the 'I've been looking out for this kind of rock music since I started reviewing', joining a scant few bands whose records I can always go back to again and again regardless of when it is in the year or where I am. There's something to the different layers coming together (like on <i>Спасибо , тебе, за эти берега</i>) that I just feel is very optimistic and uplifting in a way that scuzzy rock music tends not to be. We may all be sweaty and jumping around, but we're enjoying every damn minute of it while Octopus! do their thing. The bass on <i>Shark Attack</i> is simply perfection. It's dirty, ladden with a effects, but it delivers on tongue-in-cheek menace and a sense of cool that I can just wrap myself up in and wear like armour. The drumming can go from standard fair, merely keeping the beat (though in this case, that's no easy task. Things move at a clip) to taking progressive detour fills (the short interlude on <i>Vulcano</i>, for instance) when the bass decides to stand down for a few seconds. That one person is doing all of this is both mighty impressive (my hat is off to you madame/sir), but also makes a lot of sense. Some of the time changes being thrown around on here would probably leads to a rip in space-time if it someone else had to try and keep the rhythm together. I would occasionally put When Will You Stop? on every now and again over my time away, and every time I wanted to drop everything and sing its praises from on wasfeursohr high. Now I finally can, and have. Classically instrumentalized music usually has a hard standing among the broader masses (unless you are happen to be born with the name Bach, Mozart or Smetana and have access to a 100 man orchestra), but <i>Ruben Lozano</i> has a way of weaving modern elements into his classical pieces, making them feel fresh and inspirational in a way that manages to touch a wider audience. <i>The Astronaut Nocturnes</i> are a different take on the same space theme that he already explored in <i>The Astronaut</i>. However, where his previous LP was created as an imagining of the sound of exploring the vastness and grandeur of space, Nocturnes is a more sober look on things, the night after if you will. Instead of being overwhelmed by celestial bodies, it is the sound of reminiscence. Memories of great, historical or personal moments, lingering in the air, intermingling with the dust that settled between the old and ancient records of discoveries past. This nocturne is not a dark one, the memories of the astronaut are valuable to him, worth being treasured and given to us as a record of his exploration and experience.<br /> <i>Nocturnes</i> might not be as grand as <i>The Astronaut</i> was, but dont deserve the smaller emotions in life just as much appreciation for not freezing us constantly in awe if we were showered in amazement constantly? Highly recommended, and I am betting on <i>Ruben Lozanos</i> next outing not being disappointing either. color: white;"> <span style="font-size: small;"><b>Impressions</b></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"> When I listen to this, the old SNL 'Bill Brasky' skit about Brasky scissor kicking Angela Lansbury is the first thing that comes to mind, and hell, such an event probably sounded a little something like this (A little ironic I suppose, but more on that later). <i>Everything Went Static</i> is a rock and roll affair of the 'band picks fights with audience' variety. Meaty guitar riffing abound, as Lansbury pound their way through 10 head banging tracks of a stoner rock and roll. One not be a meathead to get a little something from <i>Everything</i>, as while it is hard, fast, and mostly howled in a very straight forward manner, the band both in lyrical content, logo, and album art seem to be shining their light on the terrible TV landscape out there in the real world. Maybe not the most original target in the world, but in this case, I didn't really care what was being yelled in my earholes so long as the music accompanying it was this consistently good. And while the vocals fall into throat shredding territory (of which I'm not usually a fan), I don't think anything else would have worked. No macho crooning, no Nickelback impressions (also thank god, you wouldn't believe the number of records ruined by that). Sing when it's called for, yell at me the rest of the time please. Lansbury also break up the pummelling to try a few different sounds on for size, mainly punk and hardcore. The Instrumentalist say, is a bit punk, a little early Metallica-like thrash (you'll know when that part kicks in). Lansbury have also accomplished something few bands I've come across while reviewing for Wasfuersohr have done, and that's write an LP's worth of material worth listening to from front to back, and in this case still eave me wanting more. How do I know? This demo is a lot of fun to listen to. The riffage in each song stood out to me as a clear reminder that the true spirit of rock is not dead. It really is excellent. I remember the riff from <i>Liars and Fools</i> being stuck in my head as I was getting dressed in the morning (weird, right?). But that’s the sort of thing I’m talking about. It has Maiden-esque venom with a garage punk mentality; and plenty of rough head shaking which would make anyone with long hair make it dance. The rest of the songs pretty much follow the same description too. Some more technical than others whether in flaming solos like the one at the end of <i>Bastards and Born Again</i>, and this demo has a groover in the 3<sup>rd</sup> track, which happens to be my favorite. I love the chorus’s harmonious style incorporated in such a raw mix of distortion. I would like to remind people that it would be even more harmonious if the vocals matched the pitch a little better… but because it’s more of a recording issue, I give the vocalist a pass. A crisper recording of the wails would make this demo really ripe, meaning that’s all I’d recommend for Static Brains to blossom into a band I’d listen to often. It hasn’t exactly been an ‘all to myself’ past couple of weeks lately, and this is perfect for unwinding… all of which I think is the desired purpose for a 6-track, 20 minute, sweet simmering release. Not simmering like a whiny tea kettle, but like a pot full of scented herbs lightly evaporating by water. Water evaporating herbs. Not physically understandable but still makes sense? Anyway, while there’s something discomforting and anxious about the name, <i>Endlessly Floating Home</i>, I thought this was very gentle and welcoming. Perhaps that’s the goal. The idea of home and what it means, somehow lost in transition.<o:p></o:p></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"> But I will admit, <i>Kamikaze Lover</i>s is as simmering as it gets. It’s the featured track here and for good reason: it’s a high point but not too high. It’s romantic and cool; perfect for outdoor, backyard serenading. All you need is a good pair of headphones and 5 patient minutes to <i>really</i> feel all of the pleasantries of soft keyboard chords and soft vocals, which really doesn’t take much. The vocals were my favorite aspect of this release. They’re different, with a surprising amount of emotion in the same laid-back and docile delivery throughout most of the songs. The same goes for <i>Bones, </i>my favorite track here. To me, it resembles the <i>Endlessly</i> feature because of its sad, broken, and wistful tone.<br /> Maybe after a couple of more full listens, below there’d be one more record awarded for such an enjoyable listen this gives, but my analysis demands more in the area of identity. These tracks aren’t strikingly capturing and can only be heard in all of their entirety for the most reward. Not just because of the simplicity of piano, acoustic guitar, and the occasional synth, but there wasn’t a <i>true</i> face to each song. To BOWANDAERO’s defense, the set is called <i>Endlessly Floating Home,</i> and the tracks would most likely resemble bubbles of haziness like memories (which they do in my opinion), but my suggestion remains. However, that’s as far as my constructive ear picks out.<o:p></o:p></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"> <o:p></o:p></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Although I haven’t heard either of the original versions of the couple of covers done, I think it’s blameless to have them here because of how they make the project complete. But not as complete as the closer makes this feel. The closer is precious, and I’d honestly tell someone to listen to all of <i>Endlessly Floating Home</i> just to listen to the closer. This implication isn’t taking away from the rest of the songs, but <i>Miss Nightsky </i>is an absolute acoustic lullaby, and gets all of my stars. Low and behold a Skinny Girls (who I last reviewed here) record comes down the pipe for me to explore. Kate Moss stalking is out this time around, and so too is the cold minimalist approach, here replaced with a warmer sound, a greater cohesiveness and structure to both song and record alike that outdoes its predecessor. The switch from away darker thematic content to something comparatively brighter affords Skinny Girls a different sonic palette to create with, well as much as music based entirely around keyboards and synthesizers stretching single notes out to infinity and layering them on top of each other can. Things do tend to remain minimalist, and as I said, all synthesizer based, but now instead of noise and industrial groans we get what I can only describe as New Age love songs. “Tired Smiles” is the song for two people exhausted from their day sitting in the same room, not speaking, simply content. The slow note changes give the song a hymn-like quality that really does put your mind at ease. Things, yeah things are good. Of course, a Skinny Girls record wouldn't be complete without one track that flies in the face of everything I just said, and “City Girl, I Hate Your Friends” is that song, sounding like a plane taking off in a vacuum cleaner it's the closest things get to “Kate Moss”. That ringing really jumps out at you after 4 tracks of relative calm. That being the case, “Song for The Spine” actually sticks out more that “City Girls”, sounding like Christmas music through a broken AM radio, all jangles and simple keyboard notes shrunk down to miniature. Skinny Girls have afforded themselves that kind of breathing room. Some will find the record boring, and there may be an argument to be made for that. If you're not on board by track 3, you can probably look elsewhere, but if you haven't left by then, sit back and let Skinny Girls do the rest. I enjoyed listening to <i>Frowning Trees</i> immensely because I thought these guys did a great job of embracing the Lo-Fi nature of these tracks and integrated it into the sound as an elemental part of the listening experience by mixing melodic guitar riffs and vocals with diffuse background noise. Even though I know that certain genres and sub genres are not everyone's cup of tea, its easy to forget how simple you can throw someone off guard with "imperfect" music if he is used to consuming music that has been produced for the radio/with mass audiences in mind. <i>Keep the Glow</i> isnt perfect, and it obviously doesnt need to be to pull me in with its charme. It even has some flaws that distract me a bit too much and take me out of the experience at times, especially something like varying volume levels and a certain track of which I am personally not too fond of, but overall this is a damn fine record that is very well worth listening and dreaming off to. If you are put off at first, take my advice and try once more later. When Whitfield fell into my hands and I started listening to it, I noticed how much I miss the Indie bands from the early 2000's. <i>Top of the World</i> evokes that memory, and I was thinking back to the Killers concert I've attended years ago, while <i>Talk</i> has a certain Coldplay touch to it. If your music can evoke those memories and comparisons, then you certainly know your way around your instruments. However, this also highlights the issues with these tracks, since they seem slightly derivative overall. Almost all tracks are of the highest quality and very enjoyable to listen to, but Whitfield probably play it a bit too safe to stand out of the huge Indie/Pop crowd. These guys are good, but if I am being constantly reminded of other, great bands, then I end up listening to the other bands I am being reminded of instead of listening to these songs.<br /> These tracks might not manage to stick to the wall for too long, but that doesnt mean that its not worth listening to <i>Tornado Cutie</i>. I actually wish these guys were better well known so for their next album they could start working on these little aspects that distinguishes the great bands in the genre. It's also one of the few records I instantly knew I'd be putting up on the blog, no hesitation. It's been a while since I've come across my genre of genres post-rock on bandcamp (admittedly I haven't been able to devote as much time to reviews, but I digress). To hear an entire records worth of so called “post-rock”, and not have guitars blazing the trail is not only surprising, it's one of the best features of the record! Some of the most evocative sections feel more sound like they're ambient electronic, sliding between Lustmordian darkness (such as the later half of “Lumi”) and synth-heavy folk music, where in the 'chimes' really do it for me. The trumpet and trombone The violin/cello opening of Riu is a sobering attacca to Lumi's final moments, especially as lead-in to the cymbal crescendo at the 30 second mark. I tend to dislike post-rock music with singing. for me, lyrics distract from the music itself, but Flod have gone and turned that entire notion on its ear, choosing to indulge in choral singing that could not fit more perfectly with the music. Having everyone in the band sing gives the lyrics a warmer feel when they're lucid, and the songs a grander sense of scope when they're not. a mix of lo-fi beats swimming in less than sufficient quality, full of pleasant and unfashioned moments with barely enough static to propel across this river of tape (pretty specific taste, right?). Although these are beats, they’re not bangers (of head banging stature, maybe bobbing) but rather, the kinds that make one smile and listen or just sit back to enjoy a combination of easy, refreshing chopped up samples. Each of these tracks is almost like transitioning for a staged play, but at the same time can act as background for a muted scene in a variety of films. There are several high moments with recollective, sweet feelings (<i>Sunshine of My...</i>) as well as lows with slower or darker themes (<i>Clips</i>), and even songs that just make you want to <i>stop </i>and <i>think </i>(<i>Out the Dark</i>). While the samples are refreshing however, there isn't much in the way of mixing up how these beats are displayed. Additional track layers or perhaps experimenting with song structure would have been fun. This album may be <i>too</i> simple, but one can argue against that as well, because it makes this an easy, enjoyable listen. These tracks are built off of short samples and propel into a fibrous beat, with the choppiness being a highlight. Of course there’s occasional dialogue lines, which is always a must for any beat tape, and in <i>Just Breathe</i>. they are used sparingly and fittingly. <i>El Viaje</i>’s ending is a heartwarming sample of father and sun (get it?) which adds new appearance to the track. Another noticeable ending is <i>Buitiful</i>’s quote, “I’ve gotta be happy”, referring to one’s faith and principles. It’s an ideal way to start <i>Sol</i> by Hailo and end this album. This self-titled album spits out rather gritty tunes with ferocity and flare but nothing of an angry nature. They are a 3 piece punk rock band with what sounds to me like plenty of Arctic Monkeys influence (1<sup>st</sup> album). But what makes this album so fun? Layers! As far as the eye can see. No but really, these guys really know how to jam and that’s one of my favorite things about really rad bands. Jamming out is what turns a two minute rock song into a three of four minute I WANNA ROCK song. More importantly, their name is so accurate. They <i>do</i> stand out and yes, in a passive manner. Stand out with a different edge and focus but passively accessible. These talented boys make indie tightly knitted in a punk beat. Sometimes you get a distorted and shreddy solo, sometimes you get a smoothly groovy bass line, and if you’re lucky the drummer will fill you up with nitrogen. Well you need not ponder any longer as Pirate Jenny are indeed a band of salty seadogs belting out the best in pirate-themed rock music (there's a sentence one doesn't get to type too often). Apparently 'pirate rock' is an actual thing, which is news to me, and it sounds a bit like ska and indie rock music themed around, well, pirates and life at sea. I would have thought such a silly gimmick would probably involve some terrible music. I was be wrong. These guys take the music seriously, with 11 well crafted and extremely catchy tunes of the pirate life. A lot of it appears to be typical four piece at first listen – 2 guitars, drums and bass, but the extra instruments the band affords themselves (like an accordion, steel drum, xylophone[?!], electric organ, piano) really do give things a cartoonishly accurate sound, conjuring up eye patches, be-parroted shoulders, steins full of grog and life on tall ships albeit one that's more Spongebob colourful than it is bouts of scurvy and 15<sup>th</sup>/16<sup>th</sup> century sea crime. There's even a couple contemplative songs that explore the toll life at sea can take on ones psyche (“Overboard”) to uh.. ground the proceedings. Pirate life isn't all swashbuckling and wenches after all. “Postmodern Pirates” could almost pass for Devo-eqsue, with a pirate reflecting on the pirates place in the world. Honestly, I may have called the pirate thing silly earlier, but these guys are so obviously aware of that, diving in headlong anyway. So even if you have a big smirk on your face at the lyrics (final track “All Ships Rock” for instance, which takes a peg-legged cue from Queen style rock ballads) because you cannot take them seriously, you'll still enjoy yourself. Definite guilty pleasure material folks. <i>Shipwreck</i> may be Pirate Jenny's first full release in over a decade, but it doesn't sound like a cash-in with no soul that a lot of bands choose to do after so long. I guess it's hard for a pirate to phone it in... color: white;"> <span style="font-size: small;"><b>Impressions</b></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"> It would appear that the first bands trying to capture a bit of Sleigh Bells' crossover success are here, and Twin//Venus have managed to find that sweet spot on <i>TenderFang</i>, with just enough noise and feedback piled on top of simmering-sweet vocals, themselves occasionally awash in effects. Whereas SB went for full frontal assault on guitars and hiss, Twin//Venus have thankfully taken the path of slightly more worn and parred back the layers of noise so that the song structure can shine through like a drum-machine loop of sunlight cutting through the darkness. Mind you, that slightly worn path isn't the most excitingly built (keyboards, guitars, and drum machines are the building blocks of Twin//Venus sound), but the songs themselves are varied in tempo and genre leanings - lots more cold techno and electronic than guitar rock in actuality. The vocals on “NothingCanBeatYou” might cause frost to form, even if the lyrics aren't nearly as cold-hearted as the music they're sung over. The proceedings are helped along by the songs being brief, just when one trick starts getting stale, Twin//Venus pulls a new song out on us – its hard to argue with a continuous stream of brain candy under 3 minutes long. You might not remember it in the morning, hell, you may not want to remember it before its over, I didn't care. From the first track on, these sounds pull you into another dimension full of undiscovered dangerous worlds, hidden secrets, adventuresomeness and love. Its rare that a record makes you want to reach for the stars, or at least for something that puts you into the shoes of an adventurer among the stars. An Electronica record that uses subtle, yet very powerful rhythms together with driving beats and some elements that remind me a bit of house at times (who can resist a french touch after all) to form an engaging sound voyage for the listener. The whole record just feels incredibly polished and rounded, touching several emotional states and sharing stories. Taking into account how vividly these tracks put corresponding images into my mind, its hard to see this just as a music album, and not as a part of a bigger picture. If there is anything bad I can say about this record, its that I want the corresponding game, book or movie and I want it NOW. And while I hope that never comes to fruition (mental images will only leave lasting psychological scars, so it's better to not picture it), I'll be damned if this music is not catchy as all get-out. Here, by way of the internets is <i>Outrun Europa</i> a compilation of retro 80's electronic synth (30 tracks of it, in fact.) that I can't stop listening to. I have been listening to a lot of this genre lately, and when this landed in my lap, I didn't know what to do with myself. I was not expecting a wide array of stylistic choices between the artists, there is only so much material to mine with within this genre afterall, but even I was taken aback at just how great and varied these tracks are (Plaisance, they of ridiculously awesome <i><a href="http://wasfuersohr.blogspot.ca/2012/10/plaisance-2012-regatta.html">Regatta</a></i> LP make an appearance, which was a plaisant surprise you might say... - I'll let myself out). There does seem to be a sci-fi bend to several songs, in the 'Technology is dangerous. Beware skynet!' vein of darker sci-fi trope that I personally love (they all more or less have a retro-future sci-fi disco bend for what that's worth). Of course speed seems to be a huge thematic element as well, with songs like "Excellerator" and "turbo interceptor" popping up as titles (oddly enough, neither of those come close to fastest tempo on the album by a long shot). Nothing here sounds remotely 'raw', in the live and off the cuff style that a basement folk record would. Every track, even the slower ones ("Somewhere" and "Stratus", specifically) are as sleek as that car on the album cover. Of course when everything is dominated by keyboards and synthesizers and the instruments that aren't either of those two are filtered through enough effects to sound like Tron's daydreams, the artificiality is by design. It might seem a little shallow (there's a reason this genre was originally huge in the 1980's), delivering exactly what you want in the form of endless hooks and catchy, hyperfast beats, that isn't a problem when the songs are this well crafted (straight into my veins!). The guitars are like wailing robots (or thundering industrial gods - I'm looking at you, Twilight Racing), the keyboards provide ultra-cool, cold, crystallized sonic ambience and it all fits together swimmingly. Non-stop musical hedonism. Now while I praise the album length, even I realize this could have been a more concise compilation; at least thematically, if a few of the tracks had been trimmed. Some of the songs do seem to be included on <i>Outrun Europa</i> just to cram as many artists into the track listing as possible. 20 tracks of non-stop, high speed tension probably would have been a better fit. It makes sense as a genre showcase this way, but I wanted to nitpick a bit.<br /> <br /> If you don't have an affinity for this music at all, 30 tracks is going to turn you brain to mush. If however, you have even a fleeting interest in this or have been listening to synthwave longer than I've been alive, then by god this is your gold mine, friend.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; This is a high quality record with lots of diversity to ensure listening to <i>New Kingdom</i> wont get boring anytime soon. The record starts off strong with two driving and memorable rock tracks that you'll learn to love this band for. Especially the first track, <i>Stepped on this Scene</i> would fit right in with any alternative playlist. While its nice to see a band trying out other directions, the quality weakens a bit afterwards while they tried to weave some poppier influences into these tracks. However, since the release of this record, these guys released 2 more single tracks you should definitely check out and add to your download of <i>Naked Time</i>: <a href="http://newkingdom.bandcamp.com/track/jack-of-spades">Jack of Spades</a>, <a href="http://newkingdom.bandcamp.com/track/808">808</a> We havent heard from these guys since then, but hopefully they are working on another full project, since I cant see them actually making something not worth looking forward to.<br /> Its been 3 years now since New Kingdom stepped on my MP3 player, and I wouldnt want to miss them. color: white;"> <span style="font-size: small;"><b>Impressions</b></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> I fully expect most people to dislike this record on their first listen, considering I have wrestled with my opinion on it for over a year as well. Gypsy folk, opera style, isn't something you encounter every day, and while the vocals support that style magnificently, they also manage to sound quite a bit outlandish and alienating in some tracks for first time listeners. Its plainly unfair however, to judge this record based on that notion, since every aspect of these tracks is fitted to this overall style which managed to grow on me once I understood the concept. The sometimes pompous instrumentation, exaggerated and distinctive vocals and narrative lyrics all fall in line with the operatic style they went for here. <i>Hans my Lion</i> starts out very energetic and then eases off a bit without completely losing the tension towards the end of the record, always managing to keep the listener interested in whats to come next. Its one of those bands you'll either love or hate, but I dont think its fair to downrate a band only for serving a niche, if the concept is as convincingly executed as it is here. Its also one of those bands that shows why we venture out into the depths of unknown music, showing off a style you wouldnt get served on mainstream channels. I dare you to listen to <i>Hammer</i> and try telling me it isnt catchy. Are these songs a bit weird? Sure. Are they fun?
