Backyard Ghost - 2014 - Descantece

If I didn't experience a "dark" (black metal&amp;co) phase about 10 years ago, I might have hesitated to hit play on certain tracks, and probably considered them blasphemous as my sense of foreboding grew stronger. But </span><i style="line-height: 100%;">Descântece </i><span style="line-height: 100%;">(Romanian term meaning "incantations") is a mild, yet disturbing dark ambient album, having the supernatural as a prevailing theme: ghosts, burials (and premature ones at that), haunted forests, spirits and rituals. Releasing a mere 8 days before Halloween must have been a joy to "ritualists" everywhere.</span></span></div> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span> <br /> <div class="Standard"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">Interesting enough, the artist is not Romanian. He did use Romanian titles and the album cover features a Transylvanian castle. When asked about his interest in Romania, he confesses: &#8220;I Guess I Am Interested In Romania, Eastern Europe And Its Folklore, I Have A Good Friend From Romania As Well And Wish To Honor Her&#8230;&#8221;&nbsp;</span></span></div> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span> <br /> <div class="Standard"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">The album&#8217;s second track,<i> The Premature Burial</i> is similar to Negură Bunget's atmospheric track <i>Primul Om</i>, (probably the most famous Romanian black metal band) as far as the bright, symphonic, positive moment of epiphany is concerned; even mentioning these words - epiphany, positive - is blasphemous to Backyard Ghost and to this genre. But I never really understood the meaning nor the need of these bright parts in this context. I assume they're trying to bring some balance to the troubled, abyssal tunes. Nonetheless <i>The Premature Burial</i>'s brief epiphany-moment gets altered by the excessive use of the resonance effect of the analog synth. I would have preferred a more extended 4:16 part and less resonance effect (that reminded me too much of Jean Michel Jarre). Apart from that, it is one of the most melodic tracks on the album, along with <i>Adrift</i>.</span><i><span lang="EN-US"> Hoia Baciu</span></i><span lang="EN-US"> refers to a Transylvanian forest famous for its "paranormal activity". If Backyard Ghost used field recordings for this track (and he probably did), they were taken from this forest, to our excitement and terror, while the ending track of the album, <i>Stafie</i> (Romanian term meaning "ghost"), portrays the perfect outro taken from a horror movie.&nbsp;</span></span></div> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span> <br /> <div class="Standard"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">The track titles may make your skin crawl, so I will refrain from going deeper into that. After some time I became interested in how much the artist &#8220;means&#8221; with his work. How serious&nbsp;he&nbsp;seems&nbsp;when he composes something like &#8220;You Drew A Star And I Drew A Circle&#8221;. A friend of mine&nbsp;(interested in this genre) shared his insights with me: &#8220;I see things as a performance, an act. There are some radical bands, too, but they wouldn&#8217;t leave prison anytime soon&#8221;. Performance it is, then.&nbsp;</span></span></div> <div class="Standard"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">A few more words about the artist: Backyard Ghost really enjoys using ellipses when describing his music, indicating uncertainty, unfinished thoughts and probably mystery. However, the song titles here and in dark ambient as a whole tend to leave subtlety at the door, with titles such as <i>The Premature Burial</i>, <i>Neglected Spirits</i>, <i>First Signs of Infection</i>, trying so hard to evoke a sense of dread, and terror, that&nbsp;they remove any sense of mystery. Even though these titles suit their respective tracks, leaving a little something to your listener's imagination goes a long way.&nbsp;</span></span><br /> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="Standard"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">On the contrary, Backyard Ghost, when asked to describe the message conveyed by his music, he cites the opposite effect: &#8220;I Usually Let My Musical Works Speak For Themselves&#8230; And Let The Listener Use Their Imaginations, Like Reading A Good Book&#8230; To Conjure Images And Deeper Meanings To The Sounds.</span></span></div> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span> <br /> <div class="Standard"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">I'm not that type of person who listens to music on max, but for the Backyard Ghost's rich sound texture I made an exception. color: white;"> <span style="font-size: small;"><b>Impressions</b></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"> <span style="font-family: inherit;">Sometimes my listening habits outside the blog will greatly influence what hits off with me more than I'd think (See last summer's synthwave obsession, and the upcoming Those Gulls). And the surprise (to me) release of a new DFA1979 has gotten me in the mood for drum and bass duos, and boy are Borrachera (as the band puts it &#8220;Borrachera: Spanish noun; Drunkenness. English verb: Two piece Rock 'n' roll from Edmonton Ab&#8221;) doing it for me. It's not exactly dance music, swapping dance floors for filthy mosh pits, but it's pretty groovy doom/sludge rock that you could probably shake your ass to in a club all things considered. Probably closer to a dirtier Young Widows or a Nick Oliveri-led QOTSA though, and by god is that sweet sound to my ears. The title is aptly apparent from the get go, as the recording is rough as hell; the vocals a jumble in the mix (and they're not 'clean' vocals to begin with, making them even more cryptic at times), and it sounds like a band playing in a closet. Of course, the instruments do sound quite good with that in mind (grimy as all get up, but sludge works better that way, no?). Honestly, even if the name is truth to power on this EP, it helps. I hope the band follow through on rerecording these for their upcoming album, but don't lose that dank, wet basement sound too much. It adds to the appeal for me. Giving everything a spit shine would really be of detriment to the rock music dragged-from-a-swamp thing these guys have got going on here.&nbsp;</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Two guys, a bass, drums, and some growling can go a long way when they put their minds to it, and Borrachera certainly do.&nbsp;</span><br /> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;">edit: This was written just days before the band's new album dropped, and I'd like to thank the guys for putting Sessions back on their bandcamp page. Wanna know something else? It feels like he&#8217;s <i>tired</i> of music, a Frankenstein-esque creator yearning for peace. But until then, he&#8217;s forced to doodle electronically. I&#8217;ve been familiar with his work for a couple of years now, and it&#8217;s usually easy listening, but <i>loves EP</i> sounds a bit possessed. It&#8217;s like I&#8217;m in a colorful house with tons of wheels, gadgets, and toys; but the house is empty and every room holds a different track. A little weird, a little looney, but that&#8217;s the appeal. The door is wide open, and this is what to expect from him.</div> <br /> <div class="MsoNormal"> Because of that, every song gets right to the point. Even though I&#8217;d consider it pop, <i>loves</i> is a unique diary, with no intention to sound happy, but more of a pop culture satire. These tracks, mostly having acoustic guitar and some sort of synth layer, are tied down by an exhausted vocal track. You&#8217;ll know what I mean. While only being 6 tracks long, I&#8217;m not sure how to feel about this set. I&#8217;m not sure how to describe its message or tone. It sort of just is. Leaves just as easily as it comes, but you&#8217;ll remember it. His signature tea kettle whispering is found in <i>circus din</i>, and <i>glowing growing</i> is sounds like an acid trip at a circus (as if they weren&#8217;t frightening enough). For those that just want to take a peak, I&#8217;d suggest <i>salish sea</i>. That's right, readers, let's look to the future, all the way to the year two thousand.... and nine, because that's when Killbutton's eponymous EP dropped (and recently popped up in our scouring of bandcamp oddly enough). Though it's been 5 years since Killbutton got together to make rock music, this four track EP still holds up extremely well today, mainly because it doesn't sound like what passes for 'rock' in a mainstream sense today. If I'm honest, it sounds like a band channeling a 90's alternate rock sound through a 2010's lens; 'My Karma' reminds me a lot musically of Ænima/Undertow-era Tool for instance (just listen to that intro and tell me I'm wrong), and the other tracks come off as female-fronted Foo Fighters with Grohl behind the kit. The the vocals are straight forward and earnest, and in being so come up a sounding a little underpowered fronting the harder hitting music behind them (the drummer really gets his moneys worth from the skins). I was waiting for the slyness that Ms. Paz's voice uses quite effectively to erupt into something with emotional edge, but the build up never really comes. It's the same even keel for most of the songs and a real missed opportunity, here on their debut EP (their most recently released record shows they've worked this kink out to a degree). The drumming and guitar are commendable, and are what make this EP worth listening to, which I suggest every one do. It's not the best hard rock you'll hear this year, but it hits upon a weirdly compelling hard rock sound that keeps drawing me back in. Anyone can hear that within just the first 20 seconds of this set. Random drums blazin&#8217; with distorted keyboard sounds like an obnoxious anthem. This is how we are introduced. With a quick glance at the time of the beginning tracks, I sort of knew I was just expecting groundwork. Something the build on, or being leading with. This helps to not expect a <i>song</i> song but more sound than anything. I like rocky roads, and appreciated the experimentation and unprecedented drums-and-keys. The 2<sup>nd</sup> track is an interlude of sorts with both drums and a mini soundscape collaborating, ending with an expanded reverberated room sequence. (Funny how much I&#8217;m able to talk about just 2 minutes into this.) Then the 3<sup>rd</sup> track comes in, and at last there is order in the musical hall. But it&#8217;s more than order, it&#8217;s the most pure and peaceful computer created song I&#8217;ve heard. I felt genuinely happy to play around with these bright keyboard strokes; and I also felt relieved that there&#8217;s more to this slightly chaotic computer banter. (Listen to <i>Great Bay Shrines </i>by Sweet Valley. Same idea.) But it is obvious where the climax is. Any Breaking Bad fans in the building? You will love the closer. I could go on about how great the scene that&#8217;s sampled is, hell, I could go off on how great the entire series is; but let&#8217;s give credit where credit is due. Moxie picked the perfect background to complement this powerful moment in the monster newly created in this show&#8217;s protagonist. And even though the Walt&#8217;s sample is about a fourth of <i>Baby Holly, </i>the dark tones advertised on the description of <i>Pre-Equipped</i> are left to burn and settle in the air like radiation from a lead acid battery. I AM THE ONE WHO KNOCKS. Intense goose bumps commence, followed by these dry and cold screeches, necessary drum taps, and my favorite glitch-like computer sounds (see <i>Idioteque </i>by Radiohead). I get drowned by graveyard fog towards the end, and left to be haunted by the dialogue in reverse. <o:p></o:p></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Because this EP is artificially made, the feedback I&#8217;d give would lie in the area of production techniques. While Moxie pans at sometimes, I think panning completely or some ear-to-ear effects at times would heighten the delivery. But that&#8217;s about all I have to add. Sometimes I recognize the genres, and sometimes I don&#8217;t. This album fits the former description, and right off the bat&nbsp;<i>TRNT BRNT</i>&nbsp;screams math rock. I don&#8217;t listen to math rock myself, but like everything I review, it caught my interest enough to want to talk about it.<o:p></o:p></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> First off, let me just say&nbsp;<i>Dance!</i>&nbsp;is a very strong track to open an album with. It&#8217;s undeniably catchy without having to hit or strain any high frequencies like the majority of pop songs we can&#8217;t seem to avoid. Both bass and lead guitars rip away simultaneously with ear-pleasing lines, and lead to a neat pause-for-a-moment chorus break. It displays good old-fashioned song writing with a math rock twist. Actually, this can be said for all of the songs here. The tapping&#8217;s poppy, active, and bright; and this drummer is way past arithmetic, he&#8217;s what keeps this so flavorful and entertaining. I would highlight the more unpredictable fills and punchy timing in&nbsp;<i>Tache</i>.<o:p></o:p></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> There is no doubt that we&#8217;re dealing with a talented band. Some of the riff combos carefully control songs through and out of the fire like the noisy scene in&nbsp;<i>Rabbit Hunt</i>, which sounds like a feeling of unreliable anticipation. So yes,&nbsp;<i>TRNT BRNT</i>&nbsp;has its interesting moments; but it does so without breaking any boundaries. This progressive math style is&nbsp;<i>just</i>&nbsp;on point, and I&#8217;m expecting more. I&#8217;m currently in a position where there&#8217;s not a high chance of me coming back to this album. This album sets up all the right alleys with the cool lead parts but I&#8217;m not feeling an&nbsp;<i>oop&nbsp;</i>with something to reel me in. Listenability matters a lot to me, and at times I wish I could get hit in the face more with a jab (like a shout, faster picking parts, anything). The vocals are just, there&#8230; and the lyrics are passable. This would probably be more of a hit with me if it was instrumental because it&#8217;d be more likely that the song wouldn&#8217;t have to adjust for the scattered and almost unnecessary singing on some tracks.<o:p></o:p></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></div> This math pop rock set gets a pass, but I&#8217;d<i>&nbsp;love</i>&nbsp;to hear more for these guys, and something with attitude that can catch me off guard. I&#8217;m not suggesting that they be fiercer, because it&#8217;s not their style, but there&#8217;s nothing wrong with showing off if you got it. And from there on out, one track after another hit it out of my musical park. I don't really know what boundaries define 'idm' but apparently this is suppose to fit in them, so take note idm'ers (and naysayers alike). The music does seem to consist mostly of keyboards and drum machine, thankfully it never blends together into a same-y, indistinguishable mish-mash like a lot of dance music. &#8220;Dreams of Oxygen&#8221; ambiance and dance, while say, &#8220;I Miss You&#8221; has a chilling lyrical section along sides its more piano-based music. While I'm talking about &#8220;I Miss You&#8221;, the voice on that song... Eep! The stuff of aural nightmare fuel if you're alone, that's for damn sure. For what it's worth, I truly dislike the opening drum loops on "Leaving" &#8211; Drake and Lil Wayne's type of shitty rap music has forever ruined that drum sound for me, which is too bad, because the rest of the song is pretty good - 'guitar riffs' give the track that extra bit of bite that is otherwise missing from the record. Low and behold a Skinny Girls (who I last reviewed here) record comes down the pipe for me to explore. Kate Moss stalking is out this time around, and so too is the cold minimalist approach, here replaced with a warmer sound, a greater cohesiveness and structure to both song and record alike that outdoes its predecessor. The switch from away darker thematic content to something comparatively brighter affords Skinny Girls a different sonic palette to create with, well as much as music based entirely around keyboards and synthesizers stretching single notes out to infinity and layering them on top of each other can. Things do tend to remain minimalist, and as I said, all synthesizer based, but now instead of noise and industrial groans we get what I can only describe as New Age love songs. &#8220;Tired Smiles&#8221; is the song for two people exhausted from their day sitting in the same room, not speaking, simply content. The slow note changes give the song a hymn-like quality that really does put your mind at ease. Things, yeah things are good. Of course, a Skinny Girls record wouldn't be complete without one track that flies in the face of everything I just said, and &#8220;City Girl, I Hate Your Friends&#8221; is that song, sounding like a plane taking off in a vacuum cleaner it's the closest things get to &#8220;Kate Moss&#8221;. That ringing really jumps out at you after 4 tracks of relative calm. That being the case, &#8220;Song for The Spine&#8221; actually sticks out more that &#8220;City Girls&#8221;, sounding like Christmas music through a broken AM radio, all jangles and simple keyboard notes shrunk down to miniature. Skinny Girls have afforded themselves that kind of breathing room. Some will find the record boring, and there may be an argument to be made for that. If you're not on board by track 3, you can probably look elsewhere, but if you haven't left by then, sit back and let Skinny Girls do the rest. This demo is roomy and spacious, and ironically, does have a space-like feeling (especially&nbsp;<i>Space Nap</i>, of course). Words can&#8217;t compete with musical instruments, because words have definitions, only varying by connotation; and while music may vary with tones, it cannot be defined entirely.<o:p></o:p></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"> With that being said, I wouldn&#8217;t expect anyone to enjoy this type of music that&#8217;s not a patient listener, because not too much is going on. This sounds like an Explosions in the Sky demo, without all the fancy and expensive effect switches and doo-hickeys that make pretty sounds. However, this demo has good vibes all around, perfect for birthday parties (as advertised). These tracks are typically about three layers: thick drums, luminous lead guitar, and a special third layer, whether it be hazy guitar or under-the-radar bass (although there are four layers at times). It starts with the catchy&nbsp;<i>Pizza Shop</i>, which certainly grew on me even more after 3<sup>rd</sup>&nbsp;listen, and next with&nbsp;<i>Laurel&nbsp;</i>being more in the middle in terms of flow and less reverb. The last three are more open-ended with shoegaze vibes and playful progressiveness with more of that reverb I mentioned. It feels like each song is recorded in a small, white room with hardwood floors and no objects other than music equipment. For this, the demo may feel slightly empty, but I feel like that was the goal: there is a mix of both dreamy sounds and traditional ones. I just wish more of the tracks were exploratory like&nbsp;<i>Space Nap</i>, or the last two, and I will look forward to a full length release if there is one.<o:p></o:p></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"> Above all, I learned to really like this demo. It is without any razzle or dazzle but full of pure blends of riffs, feel-goodies, and a certain radiance I can&#8217;t really find the word for. was my exact thought when I was a few tracks through this album; a mix of lo-fi beats swimming in less than sufficient quality, full of pleasant and unfashioned moments with barely enough static to propel across this river of tape (pretty specific taste, right?). Although these are beats, they&#8217;re not bangers (of head banging stature, maybe bobbing) but rather, the kinds that make one smile and listen or just sit back to enjoy a combination of easy, refreshing chopped up samples. Each of these tracks is almost like transitioning for a staged play, but at the same time can act as background for a muted scene in a variety of films. There are several high moments with recollective, sweet feelings (<i>Sunshine of My...</i>)&nbsp;as well as lows with slower or darker themes (<i>Clips</i>), and even songs that just make you want to&nbsp;<i>stop&nbsp;</i>and&nbsp;<i>think </i>(<i>Out the Dark</i>). While the samples are refreshing however, there isn't much in the way of mixing up how these beats are displayed. Additional track layers or perhaps experimenting with song structure would have been fun. This album may be <i>too</i>&nbsp;simple, but one can argue against that as well, because it makes this an easy, enjoyable listen.&nbsp;These tracks are built off of short samples and propel into a fibrous beat, with the choppiness being a highlight. Of course there&#8217;s occasional dialogue lines, which is always a must for any beat tape, and in&nbsp;<i>Just Breathe</i>. they are used sparingly and fittingly. &nbsp;<i>El Viaje</i>&#8217;s ending is a heartwarming sample of father and sun (get it?) which adds new appearance to the track. Another noticeable ending is&nbsp;<i>Buitiful</i>&#8217;s quote, &#8220;I&#8217;ve gotta be happy&#8221;, referring to one&#8217;s faith and principles. It&#8217;s an ideal way to start&nbsp;<i>Sol</i>&nbsp;by Hailo and end this album. Being recorded in an artists 'messy bedroom' will do that I suppose. And yet, despite its rough around the edges sound, I find myself really enjoying <i>Guilt, Shame and Regret</i>, an EP by Sea Baths. It's got its ear quite clearly turned to early 80's post-punk. The lack of polish gives each track a certain gloomy atmosphere, guitars being plucked, and reverberating in a large, empty space, and what electronics and synths are utilized only add to that feeling of emptiness. Honestly, what drew me to this record is the guitar work. That isn't to say <i>Guilt</i> is filed with mind blowing riffs or complex time signatures, no, it's the sparseness, the simplicity that I liked about them. The absence of any discernible bass is readily and immediately apparent, so the rhythm section is a bit under powered on the low end, but the drum and guitars work well as a duo. A melancholy duo, with the drums supplementing the guitars, keeping time, but nothing more. The lyrics are rather hard to understand &#8211; both because singer (and bedroom producing Bath-er) Sebastian Mercado's voice is shrouded in atmospheric echo and because his delivery sounds like warbling from time to time. Not on a Dylan level of completely unrecognizable, but still not easy parse out and probably the worst aspect of an album that already wears its lo-fi on its sleeve. Heck, its entire sleeve is made of lo-fi. Still, I can't turn the album away for having kinda crummy singing. On a technical level bad, but it really does fit in with the rest of the album atmospherically. This self-titled album spits out rather gritty tunes with ferocity and flare but nothing of an angry nature. They are a 3 piece punk rock band with what sounds to me like plenty of Arctic Monkeys influence (1<sup>st</sup> album). But what makes this album so fun? Layers! As far as the eye can see. No but really, these guys really know how to jam and that&#8217;s one of my favorite things about really rad bands. Jamming out is what turns a two minute rock song into a three of four minute I WANNA ROCK song. More importantly, their name is so accurate. They <i>do</i> stand out and yes, in a passive manner. Stand out with a different edge and focus but passively accessible. These talented boys make indie tightly knitted in a punk beat. Unpolished as lo-fi records naturally tend to be, they often seem to be able to evoke the feeling of a more hands on approach compared to perfectly produced records that are calculated from beginning to end. <i>Nika Smith</i> is quite talented, which is plainly obvious in a few standout tracks that do a great job of capturing the interest of someone skimming through her music. She is also among the few artists realizing that the first spot on a record is a very, very important one in this hard-fought independent scene and Track 1 on <i>s k i n</i>, <i>Ego</i>, and the first track on <i>iii</i>, <i>Kiss My Bottle of Wine</i>, are both tracks that you definitely should give a listen. Her other songs are good as well, but most of them unfortunately seem to drown a bit in the overall mood of her music because they are stylistically too similar and didn't manage to be distinguishable enough in my head even after relistening both records about 10 times. To be fair, one should mention here that she did remedy that shortcoming with some more recent recordings like <i>The Shaman &amp; The Hunt</i>, which shows more of her musical versatility. Well you need not ponder any longer as Pirate Jenny are indeed a band of salty seadogs belting out the best in pirate-themed rock music (there's a sentence one doesn't get to type too often). Apparently 'pirate rock' is an actual thing, which is news to me, and it sounds a bit like ska and indie rock music themed around, well, pirates and life at sea. I would have thought such a silly gimmick would probably involve some terrible music. I was be wrong. These guys take the music seriously, with 11 well crafted and extremely catchy tunes of the pirate life. A lot of it appears to be typical four piece at first listen &#8211; 2 guitars, drums and bass, but the extra instruments the band affords themselves (like an accordion, steel drum, xylophone[?!], electric organ, piano) really do give things a cartoonishly accurate sound, conjuring up eye patches, be-parroted shoulders, steins full of grog and life on tall ships albeit one that's more Spongebob colourful than it is bouts of scurvy and 15<sup>th</sup>/16<sup>th</sup> century sea crime. There's even a couple contemplative songs that explore the toll life at sea can take on ones psyche (&#8220;Overboard&#8221;) to uh.. ground the proceedings. Pirate life isn't all swashbuckling and wenches after all. &#8220;Postmodern Pirates&#8221; could almost pass for Devo-eqsue, with a pirate reflecting on the pirates place in the world. Honestly, I may have called the pirate thing silly earlier, but these guys are so obviously aware of that, diving in headlong anyway. So even if you have a big smirk on your face at the lyrics (final track &#8220;All Ships Rock&#8221; for instance, which takes a peg-legged cue from Queen style rock ballads) because you cannot take them seriously, you'll still enjoy yourself. Definite guilty pleasure material folks. <i>Shipwreck</i> may be Pirate Jenny's first full release in over a decade, but it doesn't sound like a cash-in with no soul that a lot of bands choose to do after so long. I guess it's hard for a pirate to phone it in... I very much appreciate their style of music, but its apparent that the EP also shows some shortcomings that stem from the time and money these small independent bands are usually, and unfortunately, lacking. <i>Amazing</i>, for example, could have used another few retakes and improvements on the introductory lyrics. The rest of the track seems to come together rather well, but the beginning seems a bit too crude and shaky. Still, I dont want to dwell on the shortcomings for too long, sincet the EP is already a big step up from their first release, which seemed a bit more incohesive. This is a very charming record and resisting the frail voice of the lead singer is almost impossible to do. After listening to it, you might want to reach out to offer a helping hand to get her out of the rain. <br /> Life isnt always made from the choices we make ourselves, but you do have a choice whether or not to listen to this sincere and heartfelt EP. color: white;"> <span style="font-size: small;"><b>Impressions</b></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"> It would appear that the first bands trying to capture a bit of Sleigh Bells' crossover success are here, and Twin//Venus have managed to find that sweet spot on <i>TenderFang</i>, with just enough noise and feedback piled on top of simmering-sweet vocals, themselves occasionally awash in effects. Whereas SB went for full frontal assault on guitars and hiss, Twin//Venus have thankfully taken the path of slightly more worn and parred back the layers of noise so that the song structure can shine through like a drum-machine loop of sunlight cutting through the darkness. Mind you, that slightly worn path isn't the most excitingly built (keyboards, guitars, and drum machines are the building blocks of Twin//Venus sound), but the songs themselves are varied in tempo and genre leanings - lots more cold techno and electronic than guitar rock in actuality. The vocals on &#8220;NothingCanBeatYou&#8221; might cause frost to form, even if the lyrics aren't nearly as cold-hearted as the music they're sung over. The proceedings are helped along by the songs being brief, just when one trick starts getting stale, Twin//Venus pulls a new song out on us &#8211; its hard to argue with a continuous stream of brain candy under 3 minutes long. You might not remember it in the morning, hell, you may not want to remember it before its over, I didn't care. These tracks are very catchy and immediately know how to please with the distinctive voice of the singer, that has some punk rock attitude shining through with surprisingly harmonious choruses. I love the snotty-nosed attitude in these tracks, but unfortunately these songs overstay their welcome very fast after listening to them 2-3 times, probably due to the limited variation the EP provides. The third track is a bit of a slower chilled track that helps in that regard, but unfortunately the issue still persists. Its a great and groovy mini-selection of tracks that certainly are worth a look, but to give these tracks any sort of lasting appeal, a bigger concept is sorely needed. Usually, I recommend other stuff from the same band or band members in this spot, but the only thing I found - a cover EP - can safely be ignored, since its not even in the same league quality-wise. The four-track EP&#8217;s qualities lie in its bare-bones intimacy (reflected in its instrumentation and supported by production that lets the down-home strains of the guitar and june&#8217;s airy, raw vocals feel as big as any first-rate country stage) and the quality of the songwriting. Driven by a gorgeous acoustic guitar line, opener &#8220;Ghosts&#8221; is far brighter than its title lets on and features an uplifting, sincere chorus that should win the hearts of many lonely Internet dwellers. &#8220;El Paso&#8221; is more of the same, with its focus primarily on the lyrical themes of lost love and redemption and the sound limited to guitar and the vocals. The other two songs on the EP are similar, but there&#8217;s something charming to music this personal all the same, and at a lean eighteen minutes, june certainly isn&#8217;t asking for much. Alas, if there&#8217;s one slight misgiving, it may be that his music is just a tad too slight, too straightforward to flourish in a crowded music world. You have those who believe &#8220;lo-fi&#8221; is a synonym for &#8220;a tag for those 30-second song covers I sang to kill time while I was on the toilet last night.&#8221; On the other hand, you can stumble on something you&#8217;ll never find outside the lo-fi underworld: something completely visceral, completely intimate&#8230;and in the way it lets the cracks in its armor shine, something that surpasses structured beauty and enters the realm of pure musical experience. So if you asked me to describe Hunt Breathing&#8217;s Plantae to you in technical terms, I would likely be unable to do it. The closest I can get is probably a description of its conceit: almost every track here is named after a different plant, and each is left free to grow organically. There are no choruses to speak of. The vocals are more texture than they are text, serving more as a sign of human life lurking in the foliage of guitars and fuzzy noise that is Hunt Breathing&#8217;s stomping ground (the occasional hints of other flora on the periphery, like a weepy harmonica bit on &#8220;Cupressus Macrocarpa&#8221;, prove a rare and therefore refreshing treat). If you&#8217;re looking for something fully-formed, packaged in cellophane and waiting to be devoured, this ain&#8217;t it. That faded Polaroid. That font taken straight from a wedding invite made with Windows Photo Gallery. It&#8217;s an image you would see in your friend&#8217;s Photoshop (or his wedding invitation, for that matter), not adorning the front of an EP&#8212;unless, of course, that disconnect is in fact the point. Turns out, it is, as Early Bird&#8217;s self-titled EP is defined less by the band&#8217;s performance and more by its personality. The band plays a charming and relaxing blend of indie pop with surf rock that makes for a potent mixer in the moment: opener &#8220;Thanks, George&#8221; begins with an explosion to shake the listener awake, a heavy rhythmic slog leavened with airy guitar lines and nimble drums, but it soon reveals a more intricate side as the tempo slows down before building into a swing section. It&#8217;s all a bit much on first listen, yet the promise of sunshine hangs over each note. The guitars wash over the track like beach waves, while the production lets everything jangle and melt, so worn-out you can almost smell the musk on the CD. &#8220;Water Colors&#8221; slows down (at least a bit), but the vibe is alive and well. There&#8217;s even some political posturing with song titles like &#8220;Margaret Thatcher&#8221;, but&#8230;well, the band doesn&#8217;t include the lyrics, do they? It&#8217;s a mood it&#8217;s chasing, not a message.
